Prosser is a small city on the Yakima River roughly 28 miles west of Richland, in the Yakima Valley wine country. It is sometimes called the birthplace of Washington wine and is home to around 30 wineries.

Sometimes called the birthplace of Washington wine.

That makes Prosser a genuinely different proposition from the core Tri-Cities. It is a separate small city with its own downtown and school district rather than a suburb, and the drive is far enough that buyers should treat the commute as a real decision rather than a detail. For those who want small-city scale, wine-country surroundings, and generally more land per dollar than Richland or Kennewick, that distance is the tradeoff being made.

The Yakima River runs through the valley and supplies irrigation for the surrounding agriculture, which is the backbone of the local economy and the reason so much of the land around Prosser is in agricultural use.
